Excessive hunting for meat and feathers brought these magnificent birds to the brink of extinction.  By 1930, only a handful of Trumpeter Swans remained in the wild, many of those in the Yellowstone region.  Today, there are 16,000 in the U.S. and Canada thanks to the efforts of conservationists and wildlife managers.
