"Silent Witness" - Saw Whet Owl

This diminutive little forest predator is found throughout the U.S. and Canada though rarely seen. Except for a couple of weeks each spring, when they call for a mate, they are silent. Nocturnal hunters, they search out mice, voles and large insects by night and rest by day. Those lucky enough to find a day perch find these small owls to be quite tame, with researchers able to pluck them from the tree with bare hands for purposes of banding.
