These birds are known as specialists in that they inhabit a specialized niche known as the sagebrush community. They depend on it for food and shelter. And while certain other animals utilize sage for sustenance in winter, sage grouse are one of the select few species that prefer it. Although there is no shortage of sage throughout the west, grouse numbers have plummeted in recent years and no one knows why.
