"Out of Darkness" - Bull Elk in Velvet
Scott McKinley

Elk, Moose and Deer have antlers which are shed in late winter and are re-grown to full size by the following autumn. The velvet covering the antler is full of blood vessels that nourish growth of an inch a day throughout the season. In the fall, the velvet is rubbed off leaving a hard polished antler.
