In late summer hay is cut and stored in stacks that resemble giant bread loaves. Harvesting is timed around the rains to avoid stacking wet hay as excess moisture in stacked hay can heat to temperatures capable of spontaneous combustion. Come winter the hay is used to feed cattle, horses and often times the wildlife that abounds on and around Jackson Hole's ranchland.
