Notes from the Field

The 4 Grizzlies at the Oxbow were definetely a show stopper and should play a nice role in my next National Geographic film on "Beavers". Also of note at the Oxbow was the presence of a barred owl hooting off in the distance. This is the first I have ever heard or even heard of in these parts. While scouring the backcountry I also heard ruffed grouse drumming and blue grouse booming. A sharpshinned hawk was building a nest high in an aspen alongside the connifers. The beavers have become active feeding on willows. Some off the dams are overflowing from the rising spring runoff. Black bears with cubs have now emerged from their dens. Lots of action going on out there for the wildlife enthusiast!

This past five days at the oxbow bend has been nothing short of spectacular. Grizzly 399 and her three cubs have been putting on an incredible show. They have been digging under the ice for sucker fish with great success. The scene has been ideal for bear photography and is yielding wonderful stills. Lets hope this show continues into wild flower season.

Last week proved to be an exciting time for filming hardy Yellowstone creatures in lovely winter wonderland scenes with moments of heavy snowfall broken by periods of sunshine illuminating a forest plastered by snow and ice. My good friend Dan Hartman called me over to film a pigmy owl in a scene of fallen snow. Scolding from above were red squirrels, nuthatches, and stella jays! After several minutes of shooting the owl dropped to the ground where it had stored its prey, a male grosbeak. Soon after the sun broke, we headed to the park where we shot scenes of Thunderer Mt., a rugged georgeous landscape plastered by ice & snow. For the next several days the weather moved in and out providing a variety of opportunities for motion and still images. I will be returning to film in early and late January. See you then!

I am excited to make our first entry into Wild Exposures Field Notes. Winter has finally arrived in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem! Today I filmed the blowing snowfall as the winds ripped through the wilds of the Lamar Valley and the North East Entrance of the park. In the forest the snows fall more gently weighing heavily on the pine boughs creating a lovely winter wonderland scene. Wolves of the Druid Pack are prowling about the area just to the west of the entrance. Not far to the east but outside of the park a small herd of elk was moving toward Cooke City as I headed in to town after dark. Out in the Lamar Valley the Bison are scattered about and plastered with snow. They go about their business grazing on frozen vegetation as if all is fine & dandy. Stay tuned as Scott, Andrew and I keep you updated with the exciting wildlife happenings that we encounter throughout the year!
